MaxVal Symphony or Quartz IP for a patent or trademark firm? PracticeLink connects the docketing system and DMS you already run. See where each one fits.
If you're comparing MaxVal and Quartz IP, you're past the feature spreadsheet. The harder call is whether you want a new Salesforce-native IP management system of record, or an operations layer over the stack your firm already trusts.
MaxVal and Quartz IP both help IP teams get work done. They start from different bets. This is the straight read from the team behind PracticeLink.
What's the real difference?
MaxVal's flagship platform, Symphony, runs on Salesforce. On MaxVal's site, Symphony covers invention disclosure through prosecution and docketing, then portfolio management and renewals. For a corporate IP department, or a firm ready to standardize on one platform, that breadth is a real option.
PracticeLink takes the other path. It's Quartz IP's IP operations platform. Instead of asking you to move the practice into a new IPMS, it hooks into the tools already in daily use. Docket data stays in your docketing system. Documents land in your DMS. Intake, forms, and client reporting run in the middle. You keep your docket. No migration off it.
The feature lists can look similar on a slide. The decision is still move-onto-Symphony versus keep-and-connect.
How do they compare?
| Quartz IP (PracticeLink) | MaxVal (Symphony) |
| Built for | Patent and trademark law firms | Corporations and law firms (Symphony editions for both) |
| Approach | Connects the systems you already run | One Salesforce-native IPMS you standardize on |
| What it works with | Your docketing system (FoundationIP or CPi), your DMS (iManage, NetDocuments and others), Outlook, USPTO correspondence | Symphony as the system of record, with MaxVal services around it |
| Docketing | Stays in your system. PracticeLink reads from it. | Automated docketing and de-docketing inside Symphony |
| AI tools | Attorneys keep their own drafting and research tools. Output arrives by email or upload and goes through intake. | Relecura AI (NoveltyAI, ClassifierAI and related) integrated into Symphony |
| Renewals / annuities | Not our product | MaxVal Renewal Service inside Symphony |
| Relationship | Partnership, with operations advisors | Software plus managed services |
| Strongest fit | Keep your stack and make the ops work move | One platform (plus services) across a portfolio |
Salesforce as the system of record
Adopting Symphony means making a Salesforce-built IPMS your system of record. MaxVal's overview says you can get up and running in weeks, not months. That still is a platform move, with migration and configuration work attached.
Point tools are a different story. Max-IDS, and some managed docketing services, can sit beside an IPMS you already run. Be clear which MaxVal offer is on the table. The platform path and the point-tool path are not the same deal.
PracticeLink was designed so the deadline system your team trusts does not have to move. It syncs with FoundationIP and CPi. Dates stay with docketing. The work around those dates gets wired together. Full argument here: why docketing still needs an operations layer.
Analytics and AI are not the same gap
Symphony's public AI story is Relecura inside the platform: novelty search, classification, patent analytics. Useful upstream work for portfolio and patentability questions.
PracticeLink does not try to own that lane. Your attorneys choose drafting and research tools. Whatever those tools produce shows up like any other document, through email or upload, then intake routes it to the matter and the reviewers. The gap we close is operational: where the output lands after the AI finishes.
Same idea for portfolio analytics. MaxVal's Symphony story includes portfolio management and Relecura-style analytics inside the platform. Our visibility is about bottlenecks, tasks, and client reporting speed inside a law firm practice. Different dashboards for different jobs.
Built for prosecution volume at a firm
Symphony sells to corporations and law firms. MaxVal's copy often leads with innovators, brand professionals, and portfolio decisions.
A patent or trademark firm still runs a different day. Docketers, paralegals, prosecution attorneys, admins. Many clients, each with their own rules. Mail, forms, deadlines, client updates. PracticeLink is built for that desk. Workflows and templates can be tailored per client while firm review steps stay in place. Five of the top ten US patent filing firms use it. PracticeLink processes more than 700,000 documents a year.
Software, services, or both
MaxVal is openly a software-and-services company. Renewals, managed docketing, and analytics sit next to Symphony. For a buyer who wants one vendor for tech and overflow labor, that blend is a strength.
Quartz IP sells a partnership around operations software. More than 150 combined years in IP operations sit on the team. Clients work with operations advisors, not only a ticket queue. Roadmap asks turn into conversations. Our support and product-lifecycle policy spells out SLAs and security patches so firms know what year two looks like.
When MaxVal is the better fit
We'd rather lose a poor-fit deal than talk you into one.
MaxVal is probably the better choice when you want one Salesforce-native IPMS across invention disclosure, prosecution, portfolio analytics, and renewals. When Relecura-style novelty and classification AI inside the IPMS matters more than connecting tools you already run. When you'd rather buy software and managed docketing or renewal services from the same vendor. Or when you're a corporate IP department standardizing the portfolio on one platform. In those cases, Symphony's breadth and MaxVal's services bench are built for it.
If your firm wants to keep the docketing system it trusts and finally connect the ops work around it, Quartz IP is the better match. Need a structured evaluation? Use this IP operations platform checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Is Quartz IP an alternative to MaxVal?
Yes, for a patent or trademark law firm. Symphony is a Salesforce-native IPMS you can standardize on. PracticeLink connects the docketing system and DMS you already run.
How is PracticeLink different from MaxVal Symphony?
Symphony consolidates IP lifecycle work into one platform built on Salesforce. PracticeLink is purpose-built for law firms, stays beside your existing docketing system, and runs the operational work between deadlines.
Can Quartz IP work alongside my docketing system?
Yes. That is the design. PracticeLink works with FoundationIP and CPi. It reads docketing data. Official dates stay in your docketing system. No migration off it.
What does Quartz IP integrate with?
Systems firms already run: FoundationIP and CPi for docketing, iManage and NetDocuments (and others) for documents, Outlook, and USPTO patent and trademark correspondence. You connect what you have instead of moving onto one vendor's platform.
Does MaxVal replace my current IPMS?
It depends which MaxVal offer you mean. Adopting Symphony as your system of record is a platform move onto Salesforce. Some MaxVal point tools and services (for example Max-IDS, or managed docketing in your existing system) are designed to work alongside an IPMS you already run. Ask MaxVal which path you're evaluating.
Is MaxVal or Quartz IP better for a law firm?
It depends on whether you want to standardize on Symphony or connect the systems you have. MaxVal fits buyers who want one IPMS plus services and portfolio analytics. Quartz IP fits firms that want to keep their tools and make ops work move across them.
Does Quartz IP replace MaxVal?
Usually not as a like-for-like swap. Firms pick Quartz IP when connecting existing tools beats moving the system of record onto Symphony.
