Questel Equinox or Quartz IP for a patent or trademark firm? PracticeLink connects the docketing system and DMS you already run. See where each one fits.
Picking between Questel and Quartz IP is less about who has more modules. It is about whether you want a broad IP suite with Equinox at the center, or a law-firm operations layer that sits on tools you already run.
Both companies serve IP practices. What has to move, and how far the software reaches past its own walls, is where the paths split. Straight talk from the people who make PracticeLink.
What's the real difference?
Questel's Equinox line is an all-in-one IP management system. Equinox Law Firm targets small to medium-sized firms. Equinox Law Firm+ targets larger, multi-office practices. On Questel's site, you get case and document management, client portals, fees and invoicing, reporting, and process automation, with links into Questel's wider stack (Orbit, Markify, PAVIS renewals, and related services).
PracticeLink is Quartz IP's answer for firms that do not want to rip out the calendar. It is an IP operations platform that coordinates the tools already on the floor. It pulls from your docketing system, files into your document management, and handles intake, forms, and client reporting in between. You keep your docket. No migration off it.
Module checklists will overlap. The strategic choice is standardize on Equinox (and often more of Questel), or keep your systems and connect the work across them.
How do they compare?
| Quartz IP (PracticeLink) | Questel (Equinox) |
| Built for | Patent and trademark law firms | Law firms (Equinox Law Firm / Law Firm+) and corporate editions |
| Approach | Connects the systems you already run | All-in-one IPMS, with a wider Questel product suite around it |
| What it works with | Your docketing system (FoundationIP or CPi), your DMS (iManage, NetDocuments and others), Outlook, USPTO correspondence | Equinox as the hub, plus Questel connectors (Orbit, Markify, PAVIS, services portal) |
| Docketing | Stays in your system. PracticeLink reads from it. | Docketing and deadline automation inside Equinox |
| Client visibility | Client reporting over your practice | Client portals inside Equinox |
| AI tools | Attorneys keep their own tools. Output arrives by email or upload and goes through intake. | AI capabilities Questel markets inside Equinox / Qthena (prosecution and related workflows) |
| Renewals | Not our product | PAVIS Connect and Questel renewals offerings |
| Relationship | Partnership, with operations advisors | Global suite vendor with onboarding and migration support |
| Strongest fit | Keep your stack and make the ops work move | One IPMS (and often more Questel products) for the firm |
Migration onto Equinox, or work beside your docket
Questel's Equinox pages describe dedicated onboarding and data migration support. That fits a firm ready to make Equinox its IPMS.
Some Questel docketing and service offerings can also work with a client's own IPMS. Ask which path you're evaluating. Equinox as the system of record is not the same proposal as a Questel service sitting beside what you run today.
PracticeLink assumes the deadline system stays put. It works with FoundationIP and with CPi. Docketing staff keep the screens they trust on a deadline day. Ops work around those dates finally has a home. Longer case: operations around docketing, not instead of it.
Suite connectors versus whole-practice reach
Equinox's "most connected" story, on Questel's own pages, centers on links into Questel's patent, trademark, renewals, and services products. That can be strong if you're buying into that suite.
PracticeLink's job is different. It coordinates work across the docketing system, DMS, Outlook, and USPTO correspondence a firm already runs, including tools Questel does not own. Wiring Questel subscriptions together is useful. Getting an office action from inbox to attorney to DMS to client, across systems outside that suite, is the gap firms still feel.
AI follows the same boundary. Questel markets AI inside Equinox and related products (including Qthena as a prosecution workspace). That can speed work inside Questel's lane. PracticeLink does not try to replace that. Attorneys pick drafting and research tools. Their output enters like any other document, by email or upload, and intake sends it to the matter and the people who review it.
Law-firm product, still a different desk test
Questel has a real law-firm product line. Equinox Law Firm and Law Firm+ are not afterthoughts, and Questel publishes law-firm wins. Treat them as a serious firm option.
A US patent or trademark practice still has to ask how Tuesday runs. Docketers and paralegals juggling many clients. Prosecution attorneys who need soft dates and clean packages. Admins who should not be the glue between four logins. PracticeLink is built for that desk. Per-client workflow and template changes are possible without dropping firm review controls. Five of the top ten US patent filing firms use it. PracticeLink processes more than 700,000 documents a year.
Global suite versus operations partnership
Questel is a large global IP vendor: software, data, AI, renewals, and services. Scale and suite breadth are real strengths. For a firm that wants one vendor across search, watch, renewals, and the IPMS, that can be the right buy.
Quartz IP stays narrower on purpose. IP operations for law firms. More than 150 combined years of ops experience on the team. Advisors who sit in the process conversation, not only the support queue. When a client needs something the roadmap missed, we talk about it. The lifecycle and support policy covers SLAs and security patches in plain language.
When Questel is the better fit
Honesty beats a forced win.
Questel is probably the better choice when you want Equinox as your all-in-one IPMS and you're ready to migrate onto it. When Orbit search, Markify watch, and PAVIS renewals under one vendor matter more than connecting tools you already run. When you're a multi-office firm that wants Equinox Law Firm+ controls and Questel's global service bench. Or when your buyers are corporate IP teams standardizing on Equinox Corporate / Corporate+. In those cases, Questel's suite is built for it.
If your firm wants to keep the docketing system it trusts and connect the operational work around it, Quartz IP is the better match. Prefer a scorecard? Start with the buyers' checklist for IP operations platforms.
Frequently asked questions
Is Quartz IP an alternative to Questel?
Yes, for a patent or trademark law firm. Equinox is an all-in-one IPMS inside a wider Questel suite. PracticeLink connects the docketing system and DMS you already run.
How is PracticeLink different from Questel Equinox?
Equinox consolidates case, document, deadline, billing, and portal work into one IPMS. PracticeLink stays with the docketing system you already have and runs operational work between deadlines across the stack you keep.
Can Quartz IP work alongside my docketing system?
Yes. That is the point. PracticeLink works with FoundationIP and CPi. It reads from your docketing system. Official dates stay there. No migration off it.
What does Quartz IP integrate with?
FoundationIP and CPi for docketing, iManage and NetDocuments (and others) for documents, Outlook, and USPTO patent and trademark correspondence. Connect what you have rather than moving onto a single vendor's platform.
Does Questel replace my current IPMS?
Equinox onboarding includes data migration support when Equinox becomes your IPMS. Questel also describes some docketing and service offerings that can work with a client's own system. Ask which path you're evaluating.
Is Questel or Quartz IP better for a law firm?
It depends on whether you want to standardize on Equinox (and often more of the Questel suite) or connect the systems you have. Questel fits buyers who want one suite across IPMS, data, and services. Quartz IP fits firms that want to keep their tools and move ops work across them.
Does Quartz IP replace Questel?
Rarely as a one-for-one swap. Firms choose Quartz IP when connecting existing tools beats moving the practice onto Equinox as the system of record.
